Colle di Val d’Elsa originally developed from three independent villages, different in structure and layout: the Village of Santa Caterina, the Castle of Piticciano and Piano. The first two settlements are the oldest and were the base of the city hegemonic groups. They are situated on the same East-West ridge and separated by a large valley, dominating the area below where the third village rises, Piano, which is the most recent urban development and has been used as a centre of production.

In Colle di Val d’Elsa you can celebrate a civil wedding in the stunning Teatro dei Varii or in the Renieri-Portigiani Palace, which is today used as a townhall, enriched with a rusticated ashlar-work and a colossal Medici coat of arms on its facade. The palace was built by Bernardino Renieri, an engineer who worked at the French court of Charles IX and was appointed “architect of the Guelfs” in the service of Francesco I de’ Medici. It can be dated between 1575-1580, being similar in style to the palaces in the Florentine “manner” by Bartolomeo Ammannati and based on the double colour of terracotta and travertine.
